New look 6678

I’m 100% here for all the puffy sleeve goodness that’s on trend at the moment (and secretly hoping never ends). I therefore couldn’t resist picking this cute big sleeve Newlook pattern.

The pattern includes straight leg trousers and a fitted top with two waist darts front and back, big puffy sleeves that would make Princess Diana proud, and a button up front. It’s a relatively quick make and I had no trouble in the construction. As this pattern is such a snug fit I do recommend toiling to ensure a good fit. I found the sizing chart to be pretty accurate for measurements. The sizing range is from a 30.5 -40 inch bust. If you need a larger size The Tudor blouse by Stitchwitch Patterns may be a good alternative. My first toile I made a size 8 and graded to a 10 at waist but it was a little too snug at the hips and big at bust . My second toile I made a size 8 graded to a 12 and for the first time tried a small bust adjustment. Why oh why have I avoided doing these for so long, as like magic the whole garment fitted so much better. FYI my measurements are b81w72h91cm. I also took a few cms out of the centre back length.

I was lucky enough to win this glorious Lady McElroy fabric in the monthly Lady McElroy competition on Instagram. I think this fun print goes perfectly with this pattern. It’s a Marlie Lawn and like all Lady McElroy fabrics it is a really great quality. I didn’t bother pattern matching but maybe I should have?

I love how this top turned out, the only tweak I might do next time is to lengthen it a tad. Now that I have great fitting bodice, I think it has plenty of hacking potential. I’m thinking a cute singlet top without the puff sleeves attached or a fun dress with either an A line or gathered skirt attached to the bodice. It would also make a great scrap buster as I used less than 1m of fabric. I definitely see this pattern being repeated!
